Gunpowder celebrates Christmas with a bang

As if you needed another excuse to pay a visit to Michelin Bib Gourmand-holding Indian hotspot Gunpowder, founder Harneet Baweja and head chef Nirmal Save have just given you a dozen inventive incentives. Forget turtle doves and partridges in pear trees; for the festive fare on the East London restaurant’s 12 Days of Christmas menu holds far more allure.

You don’t have to be a lord to be a’leaping at the prospect of 12 new dishes due to be unleashed at the rate of one a day from 12 December through to Christmas Eve. If you’ve already dined at Gunpowder, you’ll know the kind of region-roving, upstyled-home-style food you’ll be treated to; if you’re yet to darken the restaurant’s door, you’re in for a treat.

Just a few 12 Days of Christmas creations include Bengali spiced root vegetable parcel, mussel rassa, dum-cooked stuffed haddock with pumpkin thoran, kosbadi rabbit masala, wild mushroom bharva mirch, and goose – in this instance, not a’laying; rather, in a pepper fry served on a rice doughnut.

This maid may be a’milking it somewhat with the lyrical references, but I’m entirely unapologetic. It’s getting close to Christmas and this goose is planning to get a little fatter on some sensational Indian food. And I suggest you do the very same.
